The 2020 European Championship is almost with us. Friday 11 June 2021 will see Italy face Turkey in the opening fixture of the tournament, one that concludes with the final on 11 July. But before a ball is kicked, we have an opening ceremony to enjoy.

The opening ceremony for the covid-19-delayed Euros is taking place in the famous Stadio Olympico in Rome, a 70,000-seater stadium that will be approximately 25% full given the health protocols. What a venue to get things going in what is a unique edition of the tournament, given that matches are being played in 11 host cities.

The ceremony begins at 2pm ET (that’s 11am PT, 7pm in the UK, 8pm local time CEST) which is an hour before we get to see the Beautiful Game itself.

With the use of state-of-the-art technology, a virtual performance will give centre stage to Martin Garrix, Bono and The Edge. As UEFA announced, ‘the collaboration of the U2 rock legends and one of the world’s biggest DJs/producers on the Official Song of UEFA EURO 2020 has extended to a digital recreation of the Olimpico which will see the three artists come together as never before for a celebratory performance of We Are The People.’

UEFA marketing director Guy-Laurent Epstein excitedly added:

“The opening ceremony in the Olimpico in Rome will be a fitting preamble to the tournament, and I am pleased that the collaboration between three great artists, Martin Garrix, Bono and The Edge, has also produced a virtual performance that will enable fans across Europe and the world to feel closer to the tournament. We Are The People encapsulates the celebration of togetherness and festivity at the heart of UEFA EURO 2020, and I am sure fans will be thrilled by the virtual performance whether they are watching at home or online.”

It will be a pleasure and an honor to be able to offer my voice, tomorrow, at the opening ceremony of @UEFA @EURO2020, in the spotlight of the Olympic Stadium in Rome. It will also be a precious opportunity to send a strong message of hope and positivity.
