Watching Nigeria slip into anarchy is surreal. Nigerians are now afraid to sleep with both eyes closed because the menace of unknown gunmen and bandits and kidnappers and robbers and herdsmen is fast becoming a daily fixture. There is a need for elected officials to sit up and work harder to douse the tension in the country. Harassing and killing innocent citizens can never solve anything. Now the question becomes: Who are the innocent citizens?
The unknown gunmen are groups of unidentified individuals (particularly made up of masculine genders, always dressed in black outfits and on masks) who specialize in interrupting the peace of towns through abducting, killing, kidnapping, and destroying government properties. After the end-SARS protest which started brewing in 2016 and finally took place in October 2020 after so many records of pathetic encounters between Nigerians and the Special Anti-robbery Squad.
The country suffered violence after the Lekki Gate Shooting and the hijack of the protests by hoodlums. There were attacks and burning down of police stations randomly from most parts of the country. The attack continued.
In early 2021, the Eastern Security Network (an agency working for the IPOB and operates only in the southeast) and the Nigerian Army had some clashes which resulted in most cases to the killing of men from the Nigeria military force.
The menace of the unknown gunmen is now very visible to the blind and audible to the deaf. Fear and oppression of the common man is now the order of the day because the rages of the unidentified heavily armed men popularly known as the unknown gunmen, were now focused on the individual who relatively can not protect themselves.
It would appear that the peculiar security situation in the Southeast region of the country is not abating. Almost on a daily basis, the zone records cases of arson on INEC and security facilities and the killing of security operatives. Snuffing precious life out of innocent residents has also become a common thing.
When Unknown gunmen were first mentioned, a lot of people speculated that they were avengers who were against the government and were up to avenge the deaths of the unarmed protesters who were killed during the protest and quests for justice.
Meanwhile, there is apparently no justification for the above assumption hence the deadly attacks launched on innocents citizens of the federation on a daily basis which had started in April 2021 when some marketers were killed in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.
These hazardous happening were first targeted at the Nigerian security agencies which include the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), and now the army. The federal and state government properties and establishments were not spared too. Not until the students of Greenfield were abducted and ransom demanded from the parents and guardians of the abducted victims, then it was clear that the group is not a friend but an enemy of everyone (the government and its citizens).
Consequently, there is no security official anywhere to protect anybody. The officials themselves are not safe. They appear to have been cowed to submission. They now go to work on mufti and hole themselves in their stations until the close of duty.

Ahmed Bello once said and I quote “Nigeria is a mistake of 1914” do you believe this? The menace of the unknown gunmen has made it slightly impossible to defend the above statement made by  Ahmed Bello as there has been an avalanche of attacks on the Nigerian government and its citizens.

Nigeria has been the most populated country in Africa has from time immemorial encountered severe insecurity insurgencies which can be traced back to the Boko Haram insurgencies, the Fulani herdsmen menace, and of course the kidnapping squads who specialize in human parts trafficking and rituals.

Crises have of the recent time taken over the country as insecurity insurgencies have for more than countless times tripled. People been massively killed and government properties vandalized. It is now a regular happening in a country where peace and unity should be its foundation and stronghold. Nigeria has lost its guanine strength which has over the years been the reason for the sustenance of peace and unity.

The hazard experiences people encounter on a daily have aimed another round division among the citizens of the nation Nigeria as most speculations from the indigenous people of Igbo has the impression that the northerners have risen against them as the agitations for Biafra land has not stopped brewing. Now the questions remain; Who are these unknown Gunmen?

Who are they working for? Why do they make the Southeastern part their major targets? Why they operate only in the southeastern part of the whole federation is a question that would birth in the next piece of this matter.
