From the days of home videos on video cassettes to CDs to DVDs and now with cable TV, streaming sites, and cinemas a fixture in many homes, the Nigerian movie industry has continually entertained people in Nigeria, in Africa, and elsewhere.

Today, when we say cinema movies, we use the word loosely to cover quality movies whether on Netflix or Showmax. And in any case, some of the cinema movies are no longer in the cinema and your best chance of seeing them is to await their debut on the streaming sites.

Take this list as just cool movies to come out of 2021.

Namaste Wahala 

Opening up to the Nigerian audience on February 14th, 2021, the Nigerian-Bollywood collaboration arrived as the long-awaited bride that it was.

Namaste Wahala marked the first major collaboration of the two largest film industries by quantity in the world. The romantic comedy will have you awwing and laughing at the same time, it tells the love story of an Indian boy and his Nigerian girlfriend who persevered despite the cultural differences stacked against them. 

Probably the loudest movie of 2021 yet, it was met with mixed reviews nonetheless it opened up conversations.

Mamba’s Diamond

From being a popular child actor who graced our screen, Williams Uchemba has continued to wow the movie industry and audience alike with his acting and comedy and recently with his debut movie production ‘Mamba’s Diamond’.

Mamba’s Diamond will have you clutching your ribs in laughter, it is a fast-paced comedy heist movie. The movies promise to be fun and adventurous starring top Nollywood actors Nancy Isime, Venita Akpofure, Gabriel Afolayan, Osas Ighodaro, Nse Ikpe-Etim, and Williams Uchemba. 

Prophetess

The movie premiere caused quite a stir online with actors and actresses donning on Nun/bishop costumes. A Niyi Akinmolayan movie, the Prophetess is a sports comedy film that tells the story of a bogus prophetess that predicts outcomes of football matches. Starring Nollywood veteran actors; Toyin Abraham, Tina Mba, Uzor Arukwe, Seyi Awolowo, and a host of others.

La Femme Anjola 

According to an interview, ‘La Femme Anjola’ took five years to make, this goes to show the attention to details in the movie production.

This is not your everyday Nollywood storyline, it is a film noir psychological thriller that follows the story of a stockbroker who fell in love with a mysterious woman that is married to a gangster.

Top Ten Places To Have Fun In Owerri

The movie which stars the delectable Rita Dominic and Nonso Bassey was released in the cinemas on March 19th, 2021. This is a must-watch movie for everyone.

My Village People

“My Village People” directed by the brilliant Niyi Akinmolayan is a movie to watch. It is a dark comedy about prince, played by Bovi (who wrote the movie) who goes to the village for his sister’s wedding and got entangled in the web of his deceits and womanizing acts.

This FilmOne movie also stars Nkem Owoh (Osuofia), BB Naija’s Venita, Zubby Michael and two handfuls of others. It would make you laugh and also haunt you with its “juju” aspect.

This movie hit the cinemas in June 2021 and you shouldn’t miss out.

Fine Wine

This is another Nigerian romantic comedy produced in 2021, it stars your favorite man crush, Richard Mofe-Damijo, ageless Nse Ikpe-Etim, and Zainab Balogun.

It is the story of a lonely but rich older man who genuinely fell in love with a younger woman and finds himself in the crossfire of society and in competition with a younger man for her heart.

Lockdown 

This psychological thriller features A-list actors including the stunning Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Tony Umez, Nobert Young, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha, and a host of others.

‘Lockdown’ follows the coincidental and tumultuous meeting of six individuals from different works of life, who needed to be at other places urgently on this day of their lives but find themselves trapped at a Hospital, on the day the government imposed an immediate lockdown of the building.

The lockdown was to last for 21 days with police and snipers positioned outside the building to deter movement both in and out, these six strangers were forced to share the same four walls. Driven to the edge, masks came off and flaws both professional and character were exposed with an unexpected romance story erupting from the chaos.

The Therapist

The movie directed by Kayode Kasum addresses the societal ill surrounding abusive marriages and its effects on women. 

The Therapist follows the story of a woman who had lost happiness in her life till she divorced her abusive husband. After losing everything in the traumatizing divorce, she decides to be a beacon of hope to other women going through similar situations. She set up an agency for this purpose but her faith will be tested with an offer she can’t refuse.

Still Falling

This is the story of opposites love and hate, faith and doubt, grace and guts. It is the story of two lovers from the past who reconnected and faces the trauma of their past toxic relationship. 

According to co-director, Karachi Atiya, the film “opposites love and hate, faith and doubt, grace and guts, triumphs and regrets will get everyone taking a deeper look at their motives and choices.”

Day of destiny

This is the first Nigerian movie of 2021, also the first-ever Nigerian family adventure and time traveler film. 

Day of Destiny is a sci-fi adventure film starring Olumide Oworu, Denola Grey, Norbert Young, and Toyin Abraham as lead roles.   

The film is based on the mysterious adventures of two teenage brothers who travel back in time by 20 years to change their fortunes of the family.

Eagle Wings

Widely acclaimed as the first military-based film and the first collaboration between the Nigerian military and the Nollywood film industry, Eagle Wings is a war action movie set in the Northern part of Nigeria.

The movie is a dedication to the struggles and sacrifices of the Nigerian army in combating the insurgency riddling the country. It is something unlike what you are used to.

Nigerian movies have indeed come a long way, this is just half of the year and we have these blockbusters to keep entertained and this is not even half of them.
