Notable people Of Igbo origin include individuals who have full commendable or significant ancestry traced back to the Igbo people and their history. This piece has a list of Igbo prominent women and women whose visible contributions have added color and glamour to the identity of the Igbo people. The list of Notable people of Igbo origin is endless and cuts across various sectors of life, including Education, Entertainment, Politics, Religion, Economic, Sports, and etc.

Below is a couple of them in no particular order.

 Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi

He was an Igbo Nigerian, from Aguleri, Anambra State ordained a Roman Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Onitsha, Nigeria. The highlights of his existence as a priest to the roman catholic church were centered on his unique lifestyle as a clergy.

At that time in Nigeria, When Tansi was a budding priest, almost all priests were foreign missionaries. A very few Africans were being ordained to the priesthood. The foreign missionaries as obvious as it was, were generally unwilling to live in the same conditions and poverty that the native-born Nigerians endured; therefore, if an area wanted a parish priest, the local people in such area had to raise enough money so that the priest could live well.

That was never the case when Tansi became a priest, he worked in the parishes of Nnewi, Akpu/Ajalli, Dunukofia, and Aguleri. Changed the narrative entirely and was later made a Trappist Monk at Mount Saint Bernard Monastery in England. 

Chinua Achebe

His complete name is Albert Chinụalụmọgụ Achebe. He was a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic writer who is highly regarded as the most prestigious dominant figure in modern African literature. A lot of people might be tempted to argue that Things fall apart was his first publish but no, His first novel was magnum opus.

Meanwhile, Things Fall Apart which he published, 1958, occupies a pivotal place in African literature and has remained the most widely studied, taught, and read African novel.

What’s the Origin of The Name Igbo

Chinua Achebe was titled Igbo chief, He sought to escape the colonial perspective among the people, that predominated African literature, and drew his major lines from the traditions of the Igbo people, Christian influences, and the clash between Western and African values to create what can be tagged, a uniquely African voice.

Chinua Achebe hails from Idemili North LGA, Anambra state, was born16 November 1930  and he died, 21 March 2013.

Nwankwo Kanu OON

Kanu Nwankwo as he’s popularly addressed is a Nigerian former professional footballer who played as a forward. He was a member of the Nigeria national team and played for the Nigerian team Iwuanyanwu Nationale, West Bromwich Albion, Dutch side Ajax, Inter Milan of Italy, and English clubs Arsenal, and Portsmouth.

Kanu Nwankwo made the third-most substitute appearances in Premier League history, appearing from the bench 118 times, He is a household name, and is regarded as one of the best players in African football history. He won a UEFA Champions League medal, three FA Cup medals, and two African Player of the Year awards, a UEFA Cup medal amongst others. He is one of few players to have won the Premier League.

He is also to his credit an African brand ambassador for digital TV operator StarTimes and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and  He is also the owner of Kanu Sports TV, an Internet sports television company.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

It is safe to opine that the Nigerian writer whose works range from short stories to novels to nonfiction by name, Chimamanda was born with a pen. The Igbo-born writer landmarked her name and had them renewed each time she released a new copy of her work.

Chimamanda, a feminist, authored Purple Hibiscus (2003), The Thing Around Your Neck (2009), Half of a Yellow Sun (2006), and Americanah (2013), and a collection of other numerous literally work.

In 2008, she was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant. She was born on 15 September 1977 and some of her most recent books include Dear Ijeawele 2017, and Notes on Grief 2021.

Nnamdi Azikiwe

He is usually referred to as Zik and had many establishments named after the effect, He was the first President of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966 as a statesman and political leader. Considered a driving force behind the nation’s independence, he came to be known as the “father of Nigerian Nationalism”.

Born to Igbo parents from Anambra State, Eastern Nigeria in Zungeru in present-day Niger State, as a young boy he learned to speak Hausa which is the main indigenous language of the Northern Region.

Azikiwe was later on sent to live with his aunt and paternal grandmother in Onitsha, his homeland, where he learned the Igbo language. A stay in Lagos exposed him to the Yoruba language; by the time he was in college, he had been exposed to different Nigerian cultures and spoke three languages.

In British West Africa, he advocated Nigerian and African nationalism as a journalist and a political leader.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Okonjo-Iweala is an Igbo woman, who is a Nigerian-American economist and international development expert, a woman who has served since March 2021 as Director-General of the World Trade Organization. She is also the first woman and the first African to hold that office as a Director-General.

Okonjo-Iweala worked with World Bank as a development economist and had a 25-year career in that office. From 2007-2011, she rose to the number two position of managing director, operations.

She also served two terms as Finance Minister of Nigeria the year 2003–2006 and 2011–2015, under Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan respectively. In 2005, a global organization known as Euromoney gave her international recognition and named her global finance minister of the year.
