Four Policemen Killed As Unknown Gunmen Attack Checkpoint In Enugu

At least four policemen have been confirmed dead in a deadly attack carried out by unknown gunmen on a security checkpoint in Enugu state.

The attack which happened on Wednesday evening at a checkpoint located in Obeagu-Amechi Community in Enugu South Local Government Area also claimed the life of a pastor and some passersby.

A police patrol van was also burnt during the attack, Naija News understands.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the Enugu State Police Command, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, said details of the attack were still sketchy.

He added that preliminary investigations have commenced and more details will be made available as soon as possible.

“Information surrounding the shooting incidents in the evening hours of today, 21/07/2021, where Police Operatives were allegedly attacked by yet-to-be-identified gunmen at checkpoints in Obeagu-Amechi in Enugu South LGA and Amagunze in Nkanu East LGA are still sketchy,” he said.

Other sources who spoke about the attack said the fierce gun battle started at about 5:30 pm on Wednesday at a busy spot at Mmiri Ocha Amodu and lasted till around 7pm.

The source added that the bodies of the dead persons have been deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku – Ozalla mortuary.

“The gun battle was so fierce, it happened along Obeagu – Amechi Road to Agbani Nkanu a few kilometers from Enugu State capital.

“There was confusion and tension while it lasted, people were running in different directions. I think the policemen were totally caught unawares,” the source said.
