Kanu’s Trial: IPOB Shuts Down Oba, Onitsha, Nnewi

Youths suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have reportedly blocked entrance and exit into and out of the commercial city of Onitsha and Nnewi.

Anaedoonline.ng recall IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu was reportedly rearrested in Kenya and extradited back to Nigeria on the 27th of June, 2021.

The secessionist was then arraigned before Justice Binta Nyako who ordered his remand in the custody of the DSS until his next trial date which is today July 26.

Kanu, who is facing an 11-count charge of treason, treasonable felony, terrorism and illegal possession of firearms, among others, jumped bail in 2017 and left the country, only to re-emerge in Israel and then in the United Kingdom.

As his trial is set to kick start in Abuja, reports have emerged that IPOB members have asked residents and visitors to stay at home in honour of its leader.

Sources in Onitsha said youths suspected to be members of IPOB made bonfire in most streets in Onitsha, while also forcing vehicles entering the city to return.

It was gathered that the IPOB members were smashing cars belonging motorists who attempted to enter into the city.

A source who trades in Onitsha Main Market, Mr Lizinus Eze told DailyPost that, “We heard it yesterday as a rumour that there will not be market today, but this morning we found out that people were making bonfire everywhere in the city.

“Nobody has spoken to us about what is happening, but we learnt that it is IPOB that is trying for force people to stay at home in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu who is appearing in court today.”
