Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, has been accused of being too ignorant to hold such an office.

Deji Adeyanju, popular rights activist made the remark while berating Mohammed for insisting on government’s regulation of social media space.

Mohammed had vowed not to rest until the social media space in Nigeria is regulated.

The minister spoke in response to reports that he sneaked out to the United States, US, to meet with the management of Twitter over the ban in Nigeria.

Mohammed, who described the report as fake said his official visit to the U.S. had nothing to do with Twitter.

He explained that his visit to the US was to meet with international media organisations and think tanks on the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and efforts made so far in tackling insurgency, banditry and all forms of criminality.

The Nigerian government had banned the operation of Twitter in Nigeria recently.

Mohammed had explained that some Nigerians were using the micro-blogging site for activists that are against Nigeria’s unity.

Reacting, Adeyanju said the continuous use of Twitter despite ban shows that social media cannot be regulated.

In a tweet, Adeyanju wrote: “Lai Mohd is too ignorant to be the minister of Information. His insistence on regulating Social Media only confirms this.

“You can’t regulate what you have no control over. We have proved that with our continuous use of Twitter even after their so called ban.”
