Contrary to what you might, Abia State is one of the states in the South East geo-political zone that is the least populated. According to the last known census conducted in the country, Abia boasts of 2,845,380 residents in the state, however, going by the 3.3 % population growth index, in 2016 the state was projected to be around 3,727,347.

Thus, Abia is the fourth most populated state in the five-state region.

We know that the population must have multiplied since then, and the population growth percentage is highly unreliable with the country’s population multiplying exponentially. 

Today, we take out time to analyze local government areas in Abia State and how they make up the state’s population census.

 Aba South

Every city has its heartbeat, where the driving force and pulse of the city lies. For the boisterous city of Aba in Abia State, the city of cities is Aba and Aba South carries the bulk of the commercial hub of the city. 

Aba South located on Aba River is the most populated local government among the seventeen existing local government areas in Abia State. It is one of the two local governments situated in Aba, it was created right after the state was created in 1991.

It is made up of 15 villages/towns including Akoli, Amanfuru, Asaeme, Ihieorji, Ndiegoro, Nnetu, Ohabiam, Umuagbai, Umumba, Umuosi, Abaukwu, Ariaria, Asaokpuja, Eziukwu, Obuda.

As of the last official census of the country, Aba South Local Government’s population was at 427,852 while a projection in 2016 estimated it to be 559,900

Aba South cuts across sub-regional and international markets. The postal code is 450.

Ohafia 

Second, on the list of most populated local governments in Abia State is the Ohafia local government area with a population of 245,987 as at the time of the 2006 Population Census. According to a population growth projection in 2016, their population is estimated at 322,200.

Ohafia houses the third largest military base in Nigeria, it is also the headquarters of the recently established 14 Brigades and 145 Battalion Office Complex. Ohafia local government has its headquarters in the town of Ebem Ohafia. 

Towns and villages in Ohafia LGA include Abiriba, Nbem Ohafia, Ebem Ohafia, Ohafor, Amavo, Amangwu Ohafia, and Umunneise. One of the popular cultural features of the area is the popular Ohafia War Dance and the Igba Uche Festival.

Umuahia North

Umuahia North is a local government domiciled in the capital of Abia State. According to the 2006 Population Census, it is the third most populated LGA in the State. As of the time of the census Umuahia North has a population of 220,660, according to a projection in 2016 it is estimated to have increased to 292,300 inhabitants.

It has its headquarters in the town of Umuahia, Umuahia North LGA comprises eight towns and villages including Umuahia, Umukabia, Umuawa Alaocha, Umuagu, Umuekwule, Ihite Ude, Umuda Isingwu, Ohuhu.  It occupies a total area of 245 square kilometers.

The Local Government Area that was created in August 1991 is mainly a civil servant populated area with several government-owned establishments located within, industries, a number of banks, etc. It is also a viable trade sector with a couple of markets and the popular Timber Shed.

Osisioma Ngwa 

Osisioma is one of the busiest areas in Abia State, Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway cuts through Osisioma Ngwa with the Aba-Owerri Road running through it from Aba Town Hall down to Olaz Oil filling station.

Osisioma Local Government Area is one of the densely populated areas in Abia State with a population of 220,662 inhabitants as at the 2006 census, and a population projection going by the growth rate in 2016 placing it at 289,100. The area is primarily occupied by the Ngwa people, it has its headquarters in Osisioma town.

Osisioma LGA covers a total of 198 square kilometers with the following villages and towns: Uratta, Okpu-Umuobo, Amaitoli, Aro-Ngwa, Amasa, Oso-okwa, Umunneise, and Okupu-Umuobo. 

Osisioma Ngwa is divided into 10 wards and each ward has different villages and these villages also have kindred which are subdivided into clans and households called ‘Onumara.

Important festivals celebrated in Osisioma LGA include the Ikoro and Ekpe dance festivals while the prominent traditional rulers in the LGA include the Eze ndi Etiti Ohazu.

Osisioma Ngwa is host to several industries including Tonimas Group, Guinness PLC, NNPC Aba Depot, etc, and a couple of markets.

Bende Local Government Area is one of the seventeen LGAs in Abia State that occupies 590 square kilometers. The LGA comprises of these towns/villages:  Amaoba, Obuohia, Itumbauzo, Nditoli, Mbukwa, Ngwu, Umuh-Ezechi, Amadiaba, and Nkpa.

Bende LGA  is among the top five populated areas in Abia State, it boasts a population of 192,621 residents at the time of the 2006 census and a population of 252,300 from a population growth projection in 2016.

Bende LGA is rich in minerals such as Salt, Gold, Limestone, and laterite gravel. One of their popular landmarks is the Arochukwu Agbama Cave in Amankalu Alayi.
