The state that is known for its notorious nightlife and entertainment also happens to fall as the second most populated state in the Southeast of Nigeria after Anambra.
Imo State has a population index of 3,927,563 inhabitants as at the last official count in Nigeria in 2006 and a 5,408,756 population in 2016 estimation.
In making this determination, we based our findings based on the 2006 population census and the population growth projection of 2016. Let’s take a look at the local government that contributes the most figures to the population of Imo State.
Mbaitoli
According to the last known census in Nigeria, Mbaitoli ranks as the most populous local government in Imo State. Mbaitoli LGA boasts a population of 237,474 as of the last official census in 2006 and 327,000 according to the population projection growth.
Mbaitoli Local Government Area occupies a total area of 204 square kilometers with headquarters in the town of Nwaorieubi. The LGA is bordered by the Oru, Njaba, Isu, Owerri North, Owerri west, Oguta, and Ikeduru LGAs. Mbaitoli comprises eight towns and villages including include Mbieri, Ogwa, Ogbaku, Umunoha, Ifakala, Orodo, Afara, and Ubomiri.
Mbaitoli Local Government Area was created on the 11th of May 1989. The economy of the LGA is based on trading and farming.
A number of traditional festivals are held in Mbaitoli LGA and these include the Owu and the Ekeleke festivals while notable landmarks in the area include the Federal School of Soil Science and the Igwekala shrine.
Isiala Mbano
Isiala Mbano occupies a total area of 166 square kilometers in the north-eastern part of Imo State. It is one of the most populated LGA in the state with headquarters in the town of Umuelemai.
Isiala Mbano has a population of 197,921 inhabitants as of 2006 and an estimated 272,600 in 2016, which accurately places it as the second most populous local government area in Imo State.

Towns and villages that makeup Isiala Mbano LGA include Anara, Osu owerre, Ezumoha, Ezihe, Umuozu, Amaraku, Umuenyi, and Ibeme. It is bounded in the East by Ehime Mbano LGA, on the north by Onuimo LGA and parts of Nwangele, and in the South by Ikeduru and Mbaitolu.
They are known for their Ozuruimo festival, farming is their major economic activity. Isiala Mbano LGA was created from the Mbano LGA in the month of September 1989.
Aboh-Mbaise
With a population census of 194,779 in 2006 and an estimated 3.3% increase in 2016 which places it at 268,200 population, Aboh-Mbaise ranks as the third most populated local government area in Imo State.
Aboh-Mbaise local government area is situated in the Northwest part of Imo State covering around 184 square kilometers. The Aboh Mbaise LGA headquarters are at Aboh, it comprises a number of towns and villages which include Aboh, Amohuru, Eziala, Ezuhu, Umaumadi, Egberede, Nguru, Uvuru, Mbutu, Okwuatu, Lorji, Amuzu, Enyiogugu.
Aboh-Mbaise is an area rich in cultural value, Nguru, in particular, is known for its Itu Aka Nguru Uboma Ahia Ise cultural festival.
Aboh-Mbaise LGA is known for Agriculture and trading with markets such as the Orie Avuru market and the Nkwo Mbaise markets. The postal code of the area is 462001.
Ohaji/Egbeme
Ohaji Egbema local government area is one of the oil-rich LGAs in Imo State, it is situated in the southwestern part of the state. It shares common boundaries with Owerri in the East, Oguta LGA in the North, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni in Rivers State in the South-west.
Ohaji Egbema created on the 27th of August, 1991 is one of the most populated LGAs with a population census of 182,891 and 251,900 population projection in 2016. Towns and villages that make up the LGA include Umunkakwu, Opuoma, Assa, Ohoba, Ekugba, Mmahu, Obiakpu, and Abaezi.

Ohaji Egbema LGA covers a total area of 890 square kilometers with headquarters in Mmahu Egbema. The LGA has vast deposits of crude oil and natural gas making it host to several international and local oil companies. Other economic activities in the LGA include largescale farming, fishing, and trade.
Some of the notable landmarks in the area include the Adapalm oil palm plantation and the Ohaji Rubber Estate Obitti.
Owerri-North
You’d think that Owerri North will be the most populated LGA in Imo State seeing that it is a semi-urban area but it ranks as No 5 on the list.
Owerri North is a Local Government Area in Imo State that covers an area of 198 square km with a population census of 176,334 in 2006 and a population projection in 2016 pegging it at 242,800. However, a recent estimate places it at 292,314 inhabitants.
The local government has its headquarters in Orie Uratta, it is a semi-urban area. It is connected to major roads leading in and out of the municipal, surrounding the city like a peninsular.
Owerri North LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Egbu, Naze, Emekuku, Emii, Ihite, Ogada, Oha, Umuofor, and Umuayalu.
