Meet All The Vice-Chancellors In South East Federal Universities

The Southeast has one of the most famous universities in the country, whether public or privately-owned. Most times, however, we do not see the leadership of the schools, vice-chancellors are not exactly governors to the non-student. They are hardly heard but they make things happen (for better or worse). Today, we named all the VCs of Federal universities in the East and x-rayed them one by one.

Here is a list of the universities Vice-Chancellors (Note: the list is according to the year of establishment of the university).

Vice-Chancellor of University of Nigeria Nsukka

The University of Nigeria Nsukka is the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria, established in 1955 by the late Nnamdi Azikiwe, the institution was modelled after the American educational system and is regarded as the first land-grant university in Africa and one of the five most reputed universities in Nigeria.

Today is not about the profile of the university but the head of staff of the university. The university is head by Charles Arinzechukwu Igwe.

Background Profile:

Charles Arinzechukwu Igwe was born on 23 August 1958 just three years after the establishment of the University of Nigeria Nsukka by the then Late Nnamdi Azikiwe, Charles was born at Awka the capital of Anambra State, after his primary and secondary education, he enroll into the University of Nigeria Nsukka to acquire his Bachelor in Agriculture degree in Soil Science after his first degree he obtained Postgraduate Diploma in Soil Science from Agricultural University, Norway.

On coming back to Nigeria, Charles further his education life by obtaining Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in Soil Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Career

In the year 1976, He joined the university as a soil survey assistant and that same year he became an academic staff of the institution.

As the years progressed, Charles Igwe moves higher level in terms of position in his department, he was once the Head of the Department of soil science and an Associate Dean of Faculty before moving on to become the Dean of Faculty and Directors of Centres at various times in the institution.

In 2016, Prof Charles was appointed the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the university and also re-appointed in 2018. Come 4 June 2019, he succeeded Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba to become the 15th Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Honour and Recognition

Charles Arinzechukwu Igwe has been able to receive several fellowship awards from various institutions both within the country and outside the country for his research in helping the environment. Here are some of the acknowledgments, etc.

He is also a Fellow of Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Germany, Regular Associate, International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, Winner of the University of Nigeria Vice-Chancellor’s Faculty and University Prizes 1992/93 and also Listed in Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering; participant in German DAAD/DIES Deans Course 2009.

Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Owerri

The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is a federal government university in Owerri West, the capital of Imo State, Nigeria, the university is the oldest university of technology in Nigeria and was established in 1980.

It is the premier federal university of technology in the South-East and South-South parts of Nigeria, becoming the first of three such universities set up by the Federal Government of Nigeria which sought to establish a University of Technology in each geo-political region and particularly in a state which did not have a conventional university during the first Executive President, Shehu Shagari regime.

Enough about the university, let move to it’s Vice Chancellor. The vice-chancellor of the University is Professor Nnenna Nnannaya Oti.

Nnenna Oti was born on 15 November 1958 (age 62) in Afikpo North, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. She received a first class honour Bachelor of Agric. in soil science from University of Nigeria, furthering ahead she received a master’s degree in social science won soil biology and biochemistry from the same University of Nigeria Nsukka.

She received a postgraduate diploma in irrigation engineering, from the Catholic University, Leuven. Also, received a doctorate degree in soil and environmental conservation from Federal University of Technology Owerri.

Career: Prof. Oti Nnenna was once a three-time head of department of soil science and technology in the school of agricultural and agriculture technology at Federal University of Technology Owerri. She was also a past chairman of Gender Policy Unit and the immediate past dean of post-graduate school.

On 13 April 2021, Prof. Oti was elected as the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Owerri to replace Francis Chukwuemeka Eze, becoming the first woman VC east of the Niger.

Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka

Nnamdi Azikiwe University is the third university established in the southeast after the establishment of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Federal University of technology Owerri. It was established in 15 July 1992 after the split of the Old Anambra State into Anambra and Enugu States.

The institution is headed by Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone.

Background profile: Esimone Ikechukwu is from Akwaeze in Anaocha LGA of Anambra State and was born on 31 December 1970 in Cameroon.

He acquired his primary and secondary certificate in Cameron, in 1995, Esimone came back to Nigeria to acquire his Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.) from the University of Nigeria, he also obtained the Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm), Pharmaceutical Microbiology in 1998 and also Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Pharmaceutics in 2002 from the same University.

Professional career: Not all great careers start great just like Esimone’s: He started his career as an internee pharmacist and then became a laboratory instructor, in the Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Nigeria.

At a young age of 37 years he becomes a professor of biopharmaceutics and pharmaceutical microbiology and was made the pioneer Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Agulu Campus of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Charles also serves as a two terms as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University (a two year tenure position).

On 14 May 2019, he attained a new position when he was elected the new Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Recognition and Honours: Prof Esimone has acquired several awards which includes; The Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship to Germany (2003–2005), Young Scientist (representing Nigeria) at the “Summer Davos” Annual Meeting of New Champions, Tianjin, China (2010), Member of several professional bodies including the Global Young Academy and the American Society for Cell Biology, etc.

He was once ranked 18th on the list of 28 Most Published Scholars in Nigeria in May 2019.

Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike

Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, originally the Federal University of Agriculture, is a federal university in Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria established on November 1992. The university is currently chaired by Prof. Maduebibisi. O. Iwe.

Biography: Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe was born on 7th April, 1958 in Umucha Amuda Isuochi, Abia State, Nigeria. After his primary and secondary education, he went on to obtained a Bachelors (Honors) degree in food science and technology from University of Nigeria nsukka and also his Master of Science degree from the University of Ibadan in Food Technology and PhD in Food Science and Technology from the latter mentioned university.

Professional life: In 1985, he took a post as a lecturer at the University of Jos, Makurdi Campus (now known as University of Agriculture, Makurdi), in the year 2000, he left the university of Jos  as a Deputy Dean of College of Food Technology and joined Michael Okpara university of agriculture and was made a professor in 2003.

After the end of Late Prof Otunta’s tenure as the Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University, Prof. Iwe was made the Vice Chancellor in May 2021.

Vice-Chancellor Alex Ekueme Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI)

Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo is a Nigerian higher institution located in Ndufu, Alike Ikwo of Ebonyi State. It was established in 2011 and was renamed The Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI) on February 2nd , 2018. Professor Elom Sunday Oge is currently the Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Professor Elom Sunday Oge’s Background:  Professor Elom Sunday Oge was born on 5th November 1961 at Ekwashi, Ngbo in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

In 1983, He obtained the honour of first Class degree in Biochemistry from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he emerged as the best graduating student of the Department and Faculty respectively. Furthering his education, he obtained a Masters degree in Molecular Biology from Vrije University, Brussels and Ph.D in Medical Biochemistry from Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

Professional career: In1987, he started his teaching career in then Anambra State University of Science and Technology, ASUTECH. He once served as Dean of Students Affairs also the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences in Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

He has also served as a member of the Governing Council of EBSU as Senate Representative and  as a member of the Federal Teaching Hospital Management Board. On February 2021, Prof Elom succeeded the outgoing Prof Chinedum Nwajiuba as the new Vice Chancellor of Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo.
