A chieftain of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, says the unconditional release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, will not impede on the Judiciary’s powers.

Recall that President Muhamammadu Buhari during a meeting with an Igbo delegation last week Friday had said that interfering in Kanu’s trial has implications on the separation of powers.

In a statement released at the end of the meeting by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, President Buhari promised to consider the request by the Igbo leaders for Kanu’s release.

But in a statement on Sunday, Olawepo-Hashim said the President can choose to discontinue Kanu’s trial and can also grant the IPOB leader a state pardon.

The former presidential candidate, however, described the demand for Kanu’s release as a good step towards consolidating national unity and reconciliation.

He said: “The state has the power of Nolle prosequi through the office of the Attorney General to discontinue any prosecution in the National interest especially in this context in exchange for peaceful conduct.”

“Following the President’s visit to Imo State on September 9, 2021, we had hinted on this direction as well during the peacefully conducted Anambra Election on November 6, 2021, which saw the contributions of many stakeholders to achieve,” he added.
