The Senator representing Taraba Central in the National Assembly, Yusuf Yusf, has said that gender equality goes against the Quran.
Senator Yusuf made the claim during Wednesday’s plenary session, while rejecting a bill seeking to promote women empowerment and gender equality.
Anaedoonline.ng reports that the bill was sponsored by the Senator representing Ekiti South and a ranking member of the Senate, Biodun Olujimi.
Gender Equality And The Misconception Of The Word “Feminism“
Senator Yusuf vowed not to support the passage of the bill until the word equal is removed, adding that the Holy Quran does not support gender equality.
“This equality infringes on the Quran. I will not support the passage of the bill until the word equal is removed. When you bring equality into it infringes on the Quran,” he said.
Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto North, Aliyu Wamakko, said gender equality infringes on Islamic and socio-cultural practices.
He said: “When it comes to socio-cultural practices, it is wrong. When you talk of equity it is Ok. When you talk of equality it is no. I will not support it.”
WOMEN SEEK BROAD BASED GENDER INVOLVEMENT IN ELECTORAL PROCESS
After listening to the concerns of the senators, Senate President Ahmad Lawan asked Senator Olujimi to stand down the bill.
He stated that the views raised by the senators who spoke against the bill must be addressed if the proposed legislation must pass.
