Crown Prince (Barr.) Obi Orizu, has stated that the popular “Osu” system otherwise known as outcast system, where some people, considered as outcast, are usually discriminated against, is no longer observed in the town.

Speaking to Anaedo TV crew, a subsidiary of Anaedoonline.ng, the legal luminary and industrialist explained that such ugly trend has been outlawed about 50 years ago.

The administrator cum expert in tradition explained that the system was being practised in the past because it was needed then; however, the growth, development and trends, of the modern age has laid controversial practices as such to rest.

He further laid credence to the history of “Osu” which holds that those considered as such were people who, out of injustice and oppression meted out to them, sought refuge from the “gods of the land”, making their oppressors afraid of them to avoid being attacked by the “gods” who had possessed them.

Speaking further, he maintained that the advent of Christianity, “opened people’s eyes” to the fact that all were created equally with equal rights and none should be marginalised.

He also noted that the so called “osu” were among the first set of people to embrace Christianity, owing to their being ostracized  by their supposed people.

“Osu” system has been a controversial issue in many parts of Igboland; however, Prince Orizu explained that dissociating with people on the ground of their being born in “Osu” family is the worst height of ninjustice to humanity, as no one chooses a family he or she is born into.
