House Of Reps Fumes Over Importation Of Adulterated Fuel

The House of Representatives has promised to look into the trafficking of adulterated fuel into the nation and punish those found to be responsible.

Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Company Limited (NNPC), had previously said that four businesses were responsible for the supply of contaminated petroleum into the nation, according to Anaedoonline.ng.

MRS, Emadeb/Hyde/AY Maikifi/Brittania-U Consortium, Oando, and Duke Oil, Kyari claimed at a media conference at the NNPC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, imported the substandard fuel into Nigeria.

He stated that the company’s examination discovered the presence of Methanol in four petrol cargoes imported by the listed firms, which was found to be above Nigeria’s requirements.

House Chief Whip, Hon. Mohammed Mongunu, raised a motion in plenary on Thursday concerns the importation of substandard petroleum into the nation.

Monguno said in his motion that the tainted goods has wreaked havoc on Nigerians’ automobiles and other machinery, as well as having a negative impact on the economy.

The House instructed the NNPC to suspend the four entities accused of procuring and providing the tainted fuel immediately in its decision.

The Green Chamber also mandated its Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) to confirm the details of purchases of petroleum products made from January to date to know whether they met with the international standards.

Also, the lower chamber asked the committee to probe the roles played by the NNPC, Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Navy and all other regulatory agencies in the petroleum sector in the importation of the bad fuel.

The House of Representatives directed the NNPC to submit the deeds of purchase to the parliament for scrutiny in order to avoid a repeat of the matter.
