President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has been advised by Ohanaeze Ndigbo to release hundreds of detained Biafra members as it contemplates handing freedom to Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement released today, the apex socio-cultural organisation said that a covert negotiation is underway between the governing government and Igbo politicians and leaders to free the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Ohanaeze, on the other hand, urged that other Igbo youths held in various prisons throughout the South-South and South-East be released with Kanu as part of any settlement the parties reach.

In a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Igbo organization cautioned that in the ‘ongoing’ discussions between leaders in the Southern area and the Buhari government for the release of IPOB leader and other key Biafra agitators, there must be no form of segregation.

Ohanaeze asserted confidently that it has information from reliable sources that no more than 983 Biafran inmates are held in various correctional institutions across the seven Igbo-speaking states.

According to Ohanaeze, between 2016 and 2021, around 182 Igbo political prisoners of conscience, mostly youths and women, are languishing in the Port Harcourt Maximum Corrections Center, awaiting trial in connection with linked instances of Biafra agitation.

“Whatever Kanu stands to gain must be offered to those whose offenses were nothing more than the donning of Biafra costumes and identity cards,” Ohanaeze said, according to report.

“Whatever the case may be, this is the first time we are speaking on their behalf, and they, like Nnamdi Kanu, deserve forgiveness.”

“The Federal Government should guarantee that the Igbo secret negotiation team, which is willing to assist the FG in negotiating a secret peace agreement with Nnamdi Kanu, includes these Biafran captives in any decision,” the organization added.

“For peace to be restored, the FG should utilize the government’s tools to obtain the release of all Biafran inmates in different Correctional facilities in Port Harcourt, Asaba, Owerri, Awka, Enugu, Umuahia, Onitsha, Abakiliki, and Aba.”

“The Federal Government should demand the comprehensive lists of all Biafran detainees and join it in the ongoing peace deal with Nnamdi Kanu’s team,” the statement added.
