Black Marketers Sell Petrol For N400/litre In Abuja, NNPC React

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has responded to the country’s gasoline shortages and the appearance of Black marketers.

Due to a dearth of gasoline, black marketeers in Abuja and the neighboring states of Niger and Nasarawa have been selling Premium Motor Spirit for as much as N400 per litre.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, black marketers have taken advantage of lengthy lines at filling stations in the FCT and its surrounds to exhibit and sell their wares on key roadways.

While some of them charged as much as N6,000 for a 10-litre jerry-can of petrol, others charged N4,000 for 10 litres of PMS, or N400 per litre.

Black marketers’ high prices for gasoline drove motorists to wait in huge lines, while those who couldn’t wait had to pay a high price for gasoline.

On Sunday, numerous filling stations in the FCT as well as Nyanya and Mararaba areas in Nasarawa State were shuttered.

Garba-Deen Muhammad, a NNPC spokeswoman, told reporters on Sunday that the oil company is doing all possible to guarantee that there is adequate petrol in the nation.

Muhammad urged Nigerians to be patient with the firm, saying that normality will return to the country shortly.

He added that a technical committee had been set up to look into the recall of the contaminated products and how they would be managed.

He said, “The first thing is to ensure that it is recalled and not in circulation. There are various ways of handling this kind of product, we will leave that to the technical committee that has been set up.

“This committee is drawn from MOMAN, DAPPMAN, downstream regulator, NNPC, and all stakeholders. They all have technical people and know the best way to handle this kind of product.”
