The threat, according to Pope Francis, causes him considerable grief.

He denounced the “diabolic senselessness of violence” and prayed to the Madonna, “the queen of peace,” to deliver the world from war’s lunacy.
“The deepening of the situation in Ukraine causes me immense grief in my heart.”
“I implore to all sides to refrain from any action that may cause greater misery to the people, destabilize international coexistence, or undermine international law,” Pope Francis stated.
He urged politicians to do “a thorough assessment of conscience before God” on the consequences of their actions.
