Western armament sales to Ukraine will not be permitted to travel via Hungary, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

“We have decided not to accept any such deliveries,” Orban said in a statement released Monday night by the Hungarian news agency MTI.

Hungary, a European Union and NATO member, has a 140-kilometer border with Ukraine, which has been under Russian bombardment since last week.

Orban said that his decision was predicated on the fact that over 100,000 ethnic Hungarians dwell in the western Ukrainian area of Zakarpattia, and that letting the shipments would jeopardize their security.

Orban is usually fairly close to Russian President, Vladimir Putin, but has blocked neither EU sanctions against Russia following the invasion nor decisions to send weapons to Ukraine.

But his condemnations of the attack have been half-hearted.

“It is in the interests of the Hungarian people that Hungary stay out of this war,” said Orban, in more comments from Monday.
