In a statement, the US Mission to the United Nations acknowledged that the 12 Russian diplomats were “intelligence agents.”

He said the diplomats had violated their residence privileges in the US by participating in “espionage actions that are detrimental to our national security.”

“In compliance with the headquarters agreement, we are taking this step. Today’s action has been planned for several months,” said Olivia Dalton, a spokesperson for the US Mission.

The US and other Western countries have slapped Russia with a slew of sanctions in response to President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.
