Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has claimed that his party won Nigeria’s presidential election in 2019.

He did say, however, that the PDP was tricked and denied the win that was subsequently awarded to the APC (APC).

The remark was made by Ayu in Abuja on Thursday, when he welcomed a seven-member group from the European Union Election Observer Mission, led by Maria Arena, the mission’s Chief Election Observer.

The PDP Chairman, on the other hand, stated that such scenarios would not be allowed to repeat themselves in the general elections of 2023, and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct itself in a fair and equitable manner.

Though the 2019 results cannot be changed, he said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Simon Imobo-Tswam, that they would not stop informing the world about it since they have proof to back up their statements.

“We feel we won the 2019 presidential elections,” he said. We have the proof. However, justice was not served.

“Now that we’re approaching another election in 2023, it’s critical that we emphasize the importance of the electoral umpire being really independent, as its name indicates,” he added.

Ayu, who bragged that the PDP “believes firmly in democracy and its transparent processes,” said it is regrettable that democracy in Nigeria has suffered under the Muhammadu Buhari administration and the APC in general.

“We are worried that instead of strengthening the democratic process, which will better serve the people, we are seeing a sustained decline in those democratic practices; the conduct of compromised elections, the use of security agents to attack judges, to attack citizens instead of protecting them, and to subvert the electoral processes.

“We have evidence and we stand by our position. These are not just empty pronouncements.”
