President Vladimir Putin has stated that fighters from Syria and the Middle East would be permitted to fight in Ukraine for Russia.

“The majority of individuals who desire and have asked to fight are nationals of Middle Eastern nations and Syrians,” Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated.

When war broke out in Syria in 2015, Russia was a key friend of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, flocking to his side and shifting the tide of the struggle in his favor.

According to Peskov, the decision to deploy volunteer fighters to Ukraine is legitimate, and the US is supporting moves to send mercenaries to fight alongside Kyiv’s army in Ukraine.

In February, Russia initiated military action against Ukraine, resulting in a refugee flow to Europe and charges of human rights violations.

“If the West is so enthusiastic about the arrival of mercenaries, then we also have volunteers who want to participate,” Peskov told journalists.

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu also mentioned that more than 16,000 primarily Middle Eastern volunteers had appealed to join the military action.
