Former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki has stated that the contentious topic of zoning should be put on hold for the time being.

A more essential area of attention, according to the former Kwara Governor, should be identifying the finest person to tackle the various difficulties confronting the country at this time.

Saraki declared he is capable of managing Nigeria in an interview on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, where he also addressed several other problems.

After President Muhammadu Buhari successfully served the country for eight years, the Southern Region has claimed that it is their turn to produce the next President of the country in 2023.

Saraki stated that the South West should not be included in zoning discussions since they cannot claim to be disenfranchised, and that the northeast, north-central, and southeast are zones that have never had a President or Vice President.

“When we talk about zoning, yes, we must consider zoning, but when we talk about zoning, it can’t just be a north/south issue, because you can’t tell me that the southwest will say they are disenfranchised in the possibility of political office, and you can’t tell me that the south-south will say they are disenfranchised in the possibility of political office.”

“However, the truth is that the northeast, north-central, and southeast have never had a President or Vice President,” remarked the former National Assembly speaker.

Speaking further, Saraki explained the present situation of the country demands that other issues be put ahead of zoning, adding that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had to push zoning aside when they were in dire need of the right person to bring solution to the crises within their fold.

“There are people who can provide solutions to the problems of the country if you give them the opportunity,” Saraki added.
