Following the EFCC’s arrest of former Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano, there have been calls for the anti-graft agency to arrest additional governors who will be taking over to their successors in May 2023, 14 months from now.

The EFCC detained the immediate previous governor of Anambra State on Thursday night, a few hours after he handed over authority to his successor, Charles Soludo, according to Anaedoonline.ng.

Obiano, who was seized on his way out of the country at the Lagos International Airport, spent his first night as former governor of Anambra State in EFCC detention. On Friday, he was moved to Abuja.

Wilson Uwajaren, the EFCC’s spokesman, told Newsmen on Friday that the governor had previously been on the EFCC’s watch list but could not be detained due to his immunity as an incumbent governor.

Wilson stated “it is still under investigation and the outcome will be made public” when asked what offense the ex-governor did to warrant his detention.

In an interview with Newsmen on Friday, Goodluck Ibem, President General of the Coalition of Southern and Middle Belt Youth Leaders Assembly, COSMBYLA, claimed that the agency needs to arrest more corrupt governors.

“The EFCC should be ready to arrest all governors who are found guilty of corruption,” he stated.
While in office, governors must be held accountable for misuse of funds and other criminal conduct.

“The governor’s office is for the benefit of the broader public, not for personal gain.” You can’t expect to get away with embezzling public cash just because you’re a governor.

Many governors in the South, he claims, are no better than the troubled ex-governor of Anambra, and that they, too, should be jailed when their terms end in 2023.

When Newsmen asked if any governors are now on the EFCC’s watch list, the official answered, “I can only comment about Obiano for now.”

A journalist, David Chem who spoke to our correspondent, expressed pessimism that the governors would devise means to remain in power after their tenures elapse in 2023.

According to him, most of the governors who would be found wanting, are already vying for the Senate which may constitute a challenge if the EFCC moves to get them arrested.

“Some of them are already campaigning for Senate, before the handing over, they must have been elected as senator representing their senatorial districts. So how can they be arrested? This is what most politicians have been doing”, he added.
