Venatius Ikem, the chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, has stated that the verdict handed down by the High Court in Abuja on Monday will be strictly enforced.

The 20 members of the state House of Assembly who defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in May 2021, along with Governor Ben Ayade, were compelled to relinquish their seats.

Ikem described the decision as “heartwarming” and claimed their mandate has been restored, calling it “a victory for all that is good.”

“We will enforce the verdict in accordance with existing due processes,” he promised. It isn’t rocket science to carry out a court’s decision. Right now, that’s the furthest thing from our minds.”

The APC responded by saying there was no need to be concerned about the decision, claiming that the state is in the ruling party’s favor.

Erasmus Ekpang, the party’s Publicity Secretary, stated in a statement that the appellate court will do justice to the case because it will be appealed.

“The Federal High Court decision against our parliamentarians is nothing to be concerned about.

“As we file our appeal, we expect that the appellate court will do justice.”
