The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have modified their Memorandum of Understanding in order to provide a more comprehensive welfare package and increased security for corps members and NYSC staff during elections.

During the signing of the revised MoU at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, NYSC Director-General Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim said that the presence of corps members in the country’s electoral process has given the electoral process more credibility.

He pledged that the Scheme would maintain its relationship with INEC, noting that corps members are always prepared to offer their fair share to the country’s overall development, particularly in the inauguration of credible elections.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of INEC, noted in his remarks that Nigeria is fortunate to have a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and that the Scheme’s participation in previous elections in various states across the country was noteworthy.

“It’s impossible for me to envisage Nigerian elections taking place without the NYSC.” INEC Chairman remarked, “Youth Corps members are among the most educated, committed, patriotic, and easily accessible election-duty employees in Nigeria.”

Mahmood said the reviewed Memorandum of Understanding has identified eleven obligations on the part of INEC and ten obligations on the part of the NYSC.

The INEC boss promised to make security and welfare of corps members on election duty top priority.

He added that the MoU also provides insurance for all ad-hoc staff under the INEC Personnel Electoral Hazard Policy during election.

“This covers injury, permanent disability, loss of life or property; or any person declared missing in the course of carrying out the commission’s assigned duties.
