On Monday, an Abuja Federal High Court ordered the Federal Government to pay N5 million in damages to Maxwell Opara, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers and the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
The court ordered the Federal Government to pay the amount as compensation for the Department of State Services’ (DSS) breach of Opara’s fundamental human rights.
When Opara visited Kanu last week, he filed a lawsuit against the DSS, alleging that they had violated his basic right to dignity.

He asked the court to persuade the secret police and its Director-General to issue public apologies in two major daily newspapers.
However, Justice Zainab Abubakar ruled in his favour.
Justice Abubakar ruled that the act of the DSS is a flagrant violation of Opara’s right and upon this premise, “a cost of N5 million be paid as compensation.”
