LATEST: NIN-SIM Linkage: FG Bars Outgoing Calls From April 4

Isa Ali Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has thanked Nigerians and legal residents for their assistance in linking the National Identification Number (NIN) to the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) (SIM).

According to a statement released by the Nigeria Communications Commission and signed by Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, over 125 million SIMs’ NINs have been submitted for quick linking, verification, and authentication.

In the same way, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued nearly 78 million unique NINs so far.

As part of the administration’s security and social programs, President Muhammadu Buhari issued an order for the exercise’s execution and beginning in December 2020.

The NIN-SIM linking date has been extended several times to allow Nigerians to easily comply with the policy.

The Federal Government also considered the ardent pleas of various groups, including the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Civil Societies, Professional Bodies, and a slew of others, for prior deadline extensions.

As a result, Mr. President granted the many requests to extend the NIN-SIM linking deadlines.

However, at this time, the government has concluded that the NIN-SIM Policy may be implemented because machinery has already been put in place to assure citizen and legal resident compliance.

The implementation has an influence on the government’s strategic planning, especially in terms of security and socioeconomic predictions.

President Muhammadu Buhari has authorized the policy’s implementation, which will begin on April 4, 2022.

As a result, the Federal Government has asked all telcos in Nigeria to rigidly implement the Policy on all SIM cards issued (both old and new).

From April 4th, 2022, outgoing calls for telephone lines that have not complied with the NIN-SIM linking Policy will be banned.

Before the Telcos may relax the limitation on their lines, subscribers of such lines are encouraged to link their SIMs to their NINs.

Affected persons should register for their NINs at authorized centers and then link their NINs to their SIMs through NIMC and Telco-provided channels, including the NIMC mobile App.

He also commended the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Dambatta, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Aliyu Azeez Abubakar, along with their Management and Staff, as well as other notable bodies whose efforts have seen to the monumental success of the exercise.

The Minister also extended his thanks to the telecommunication operators for their support towards the success recorded.

The Minister also emphasized that “enrolment for the NIN is a continuous exercise and NIN is a precondition for service in Telcos, banks, Nigerian Immigration Service, and for several other government services.”

He also encouraged Nigerians and legal residents to visit NIN registration centers for the enrollment and issuance of valid NINs.
