Wole Soyinka, a Nobel Laureate, said on Thursday that he never backed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Soyinka revealed he didn’t vote in the 2015 election at a press conference in Lagos.

He clarified that all he urged was for Nigerians to “not vote for Jonathan.”

“To imply that I supported Buhari’s election is incorrect,” he stated.

The Nobel Laureate stated that voting for any candidate of his choosing is his basic right, and that if that candidate fails, he has the right to say so.

“All such attributions are fabrications by faceless, frequently self-appointed agents of deceit, and should be publicly pilloried,” Soyinka remarked in 2015.

“Whenever I choose to declare support for a candidate – as is my electoral right – I shall ensure that I deploy a medium that places my authorship beyond dispute. Internet habitues, Social networks etc are urged to be less gullible, and avoid becoming cheap conduits for the deception industry.”
