Will Smith has been barred from attending the Oscars for the next ten years.

The announcement was made on Friday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

He was banned for hitting Chris Rock at the Academy Awards in March when the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada.

The actor had expressed regret for his acts, saying that they were “inappropriate, reprehensible,” and that they had humiliated him.

According to the Academy’s statement, the actor would be barred from attending any future events hosted by Hollywood’s premier film organization for the next decade.

However, the board decided not to rescind his best actor Oscar, which he received last month for “King Richard.”

A statement issued by the Academy President, David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson, read, “The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”

Rubin said the ban is a step towards a larger goal of protecting the safety of its performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy.
