On Thursday, 12 gunmen assaulted several adhoc staff members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nkwo Ihitte market in Imo State, causing chaos.

The gunmen struck as INEC Adhoc Staff were enrolling people of the community for the 2023 general elections.

Unknown gunmen shot the INEC officer in charge of the registration procedure.

“We had all assembled in the village square in accordance to the command that we should come out en masse to register,” an eyewitness, Chief Okpegbuo, confirmed the attack.

“Not long we queued, the Gunmen came in, shot sporadically, hoarded many into a room with a threat to kill them while others scampered for safety.”

As of the time of filing this report, the gunmen were said to have killed an INEC official, while the total number of death is unclear.
