On Wednesday, April 27th, 2022, the South East Amalgamated Markets Traders Association (S.E.A.M.A.T.A), the umbrella union of traders in all markets in the South East Geo-political Zone and all traders of South East extraction doing business across all states of the Federation and in the diaspora, held their general meeting in Owerri, Imo State.

The Association critically and thoroughly evaluated and assessed political trends in our country as they effect the South East Zone at this conference, and most cruelly emphasized the Zone’s untold political, infrastructural, and administrative marginalization.

The zone continues to have the fewest number of states (5) and Federal Civil Service posts in the country.

The Zone is also among the worst in terms of road infrastructure degradation, with all federal highways in the zone in a state of disrepair.

The South East of Nigeria is the only zone in the country that has yet to produce a President.

The Association through the President, Chief Gozie Akudolu (Iroko) said that, behind indigenous people, persons of South East extraction had the second biggest population in all of the Federation’s remaining five Zones.

South East Asians continue to contribute the most to the development of the state in which they dwell, particularly in the fields of infrastructure and commerce, while simultaneously being the most vulnerable.

The Association noted that this glaring marginalization and neglect of the Zone is contributing immensely to the youth agitations in the zone.

In the light of the foregoing, the Association unanimously resolved as follows:

Finally, to very strongly appeal to those still challenging the right of the South East to produce the President in 2023 to please have cursory look at equity, justice and fairness and withdraw their aspiration for posterity and his shall be fair to them.
