President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to urge ministers with political ambitions to leave their posts has sparked outrage.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Nigeria’s president has urged all members of his cabinet who are standing for elected office to retire by Monday, May 16, 2022.

President Buhari presided over a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, and Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed made the announcement.

Mohammed said that the President’s decision excludes Vice President Yemi Osinbajo since he is an elected member of the cabinet.

Any further directives, according to the minister, will be communicated in the same manner, and the order may involve political appointees if necessary.

Buhari’s instruction came only hours after the Court of Appeal overturned a Federal High Court verdict in Umuahia that struck down Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022.

Some Nigerians, however, have praised the President for forcing ministers seeking political office to quit, while others have argued that the minister should not have been forced to leave.
