The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has denounced the stoning to death and burning of Deborah Samuel, a female student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, on Thursday last week for supposed blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

Welby, the Diocesan Bishop of the Diocese of Canterbury and the head of the international Anglican Communion, expressed regret in a series of tweets on Wednesday that individuals were still murdering in the name of God.

He urged the Nigerian government to take aggressive efforts to guarantee that all people’ religious liberties are respected.

“I strongly condemn the appalling stoning to death of a Christian woman in Sokoto, Nigeria. This violence is a sin against God. I pray for the family and loved ones of Deborah Samuel, and I continue to pray fervently for the nation of Nigeria,” he explained.

He claims to have spent a significant amount of time in northern Nigeria working with others in the search of peace and interfaith dialogue, and he expresses his disappointment and grief that such violence still occurs in God’s name.

Justin Welby thanked Nigerian Muslim leaders for condemning the atrocity and urged the Nigerian government to redouble its efforts to promote freedom and equality under the law for Christians and Muslims alike.

Welby has visited President Muhammadu Buhari four times and is close to him.
