Commissioner For Commerce And Industry, Dr. Obinna Ngonadi Inaugurates New Market Caretakers (Photos)

The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Anambra State, Dr Obinna Chima Ngonadi, has inaugurated the interim Caretaker Committees for the 28 markets in Anambra state.

Speaking during the formal inauguration of the new market leaders recently appointed by Governor Prof Charles Soludo, at the Conference Room of the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Government House Awka, Dr Obinna charged the new committee members to be diligent in discharging their duties, and asked them to endeavor to work in harmony with all the stakeholder in their various markets, to ensure that the markets are peaceful and the welfare of traders are priotized. Dr Obinna insisted that market leaders must key into Prof Charles Soludo developmental agenda as emphasized in Mr. Governor’s manifesto, and that credible elections will be conducted in all markets. He said that this inauguration is first step in achieving this goal.

Dr Obinna called on the Markets Leaders to partner with the current Administration in delivering more dividends of democracy to the traders, inform them that he stands as a mediator between the government and the markets to help pass their opinions and ideas to the government. According to him, “It’s the duty of the government to see the welfare of the market and provide basic infrastructure in the market, and it is also the duty of the market leaders to help the government to achieve these goals by being transparent in their dealings with the government and in the collection of government taxes and levy. It is either you are ready to partner with him to promote the welfare of our people or risk being removed”.

The commissioner then stated that measures has been taken to provide standard fire service facilities within close proximity of various markets, repair the damaged ones and install functional boreholes with overhead water tanks to enable easy access to water for fire truck if the need arises. Government will also upgrade and build modern conveniences in the markets, and advised them to key into the new digitalized revenue collection platform that will be unveiled soon, to ensure that all revenue leakage points are plugged and collection optimized.

The deputy speaker Rt. Hon Paschal Agbodike, who was present at the inauguration, urged the new Caretaker Committees to join hands with Prof Charles Soludo who is determined to totally remodel the marketing sector of the state. He counseled the new Caretakers that it’s a criminal offense to divert Government taxes and revenue and cautioned them to desist from such act or face the wrath of the law. He further stated that the present administration has a lot of good programs for the state which would need a lot of collaboration to achieve.

Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated Market Caretakers, the caretaker chairman of Onitsha main market, Mr. Ezeoha Innocent, thanked the commissioner, Dr Obinna Chima Ngonadi for the opportunity to serve and promised that they will work in harmony with the government and committees, for the growth and progress of the trade in the state.

The inauguration had in attendance the Deputy Speaker, Anambra state house of assembly, Dr Paschal Agbodike, Mr. Nwabufo Nwankwo, Mr. Frank Ilodiuba, Director of Market, Mrs Joyce Eboh, Deputy Director of Market, Mrs Rita Okonkwo, P.R.O Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Mr. Chuka Okeke.
