Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is rumored to be planning to replace his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar, with Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the former Vice President was elected as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Presidential flagbearer in last Saturday’s primary election in Abuja.

On Monday, the former governor of Anambra State was announced as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Delta State.

A close ally of Obasanjo told Newsmen that the former President believes the presidency of 2023 should be assigned to the South in the interests of equality, justice, and fairness.

According to the source, Obasanjo has decided to support Obi and abandon Atiku as a result of the PDP’s presidential primary results.

He went on to say that the former President’s prospective support for Peter Obi stems from patriotism and the need for balance, equality, and justice in light of Nigeria’s diversity.

A former Governor of Cross River State has been chosen to galvanize support for Obi ahead of the 2023 general elections, according to the source.

He said: “Let me inform you that Chief Obasanjo’s possible support for Peter Obi is borne out of patriotism and the need for balancing, equity, and justice, considering the plurality of Nigeria.

“On the 29th (May), former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed his unhappiness about the outcome of the presidential primary of the PDP.

“He has commissioned a former Governor of Cross River State, to drive the process of galvanizing support for a Southern Presidency, Obi being the preferred choice.

“As a matter of fact, the former governor is under instruction to bring Obi, and many aggrieved PDP stalwarts and interests together.

“He assured of his total commitment to the project of ensuring the realisation of a President of Southern extraction, for purposes of equity and fair play.

“I know as a fact that the former President said he was travelling outside the country, and that when he returned, he would meet with the strategists, including the ex-Anambra chief executive.
