Reno Omokri, a former presidential assistant, has confronted a Catholic Priest for implementing the ‘no PVC, no communion’ policy at his parish.

In a tweet, a Catholic priest revealed the development in an attempt to guarantee that parishioners receive their PVCs in time for the 2023 election.

“In my Parish, we have imposed No PVC NO COMMUNION,” he tweeted.

Reno Omokri, on the other hand, was not pleased, claiming that the Holy Communion should not be politicized and that the Pope would not approve of such a move.

According to Reno Omokri, a Catholic must meet five prerequisites in order to partake in communion, and once those circumstances are completed, no one has the authority to refuse them access to such a hallowed ceremony.

Reno Omokri said such enforcement should not be done as a means of pushing a political agenda because there are other religious organisations in Nigeria who have the capacity to play such a game too.

He wrote: “But honestly, should we be politicising the Holy Communion? I am not sure the Pope would approve of this. The Catholic Church that I know was a apolitical. If you meet the 5 conditions for receiving the Holy Eucharist, no priest should deny you of partaking in such a sacred rite, even if you have no PVC.”

“To the best of my knowledge, the five conditions for a professing Catholic to receive the Catholic Holy Communion are”

4. You must observe the Eucharist Fast.

5. You must not have been excommunicated, or otherwise censured by the Catholic Church.

“Once you meet the five conditions listed above, why would any priest deny you the right to take Communion because you do not have a PVC?”

“I am being objective here. I said the same thing when the RCCG set up a political directorate. Before we allow religious organisations push political agendas, we must realise that there are other religions in Nigeria, who have the capacity to play this game. Let us not start what we cannot finish”
