Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman, is said to have gone into hiding after naming Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the party’s consensus presidential candidate unilaterally.

According to reports, a crisis has erupted in the APC leadership after the party’s chairman claimed that Buhari had anointed Lawan for the ticket, a claim that the presidency later refuted.

Despite activity ramping up ahead of the APC’s National Convention, Abdullahi Adamu’s whereabouts have remained mostly unknown, according to sources.

“We don’t know where he disappeared to and the governors and other important people are saying they have to see him urgently,” a senior party official said.

“It is hard to believe that the chairman could just leave his office and switch off his phones like that.”

The governor of Kebbi, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, was forced to meet solely with other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) at the party’s headquarters.

At the party’s national secretariat’s NEC Hall, Abubakar Kyari, deputy national chairman north, presided over the meeting.

Meanwhile, some members of the ruling APC have called on Senator Abdullahi Adamu to quit as the party’s national chairman.

Members, including party delegates and leaders, felt Adamu had shown recklessness by naming Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the party’s consensus presidential candidate for the 2023 elections on his own.

They further accused him of lying, claiming that as President, Buhari had denied sponsoring Lawan, despite the APC National Chairman’s assertions.

Lawan was also refused endorsement by the state governors and the party’s National Working Committee.
