President Muhammadu Buhari conducted a closed-door meeting with the All Progressives Governors Forum at the Presidential Villa in Abuja as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline for presidential aspirants to present their running mate approaches.

Before leaving for Ekiti State to engage in the last campaigning before the gubernatorial election, the APC governors were brought to the meeting by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.

While the APC has chosen former Lagos State Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections, the party’s quest for a running partner has proven to be a stumbling block.

Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the President’s Chief of Staff; Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF); Governors Babagana Zulum of Borno, Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa, Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa, Simon Lalong of Plateau, Yahaya Bello of Kogi, and Hope Uzodinma of Imo State were among.

In a personal response to the running mate saga, Uzodinma claimed such accusations were unfounded, especially because the flagbearer’s choice of a running mate was not elective.

He said there is nowhere in the Nigerian Constitution where religion was a factor in who becomes running mate to a President.

He said, “I don’t want us to reduce governance in Nigeria to certain things that will encourage divisiveness, rather, we should be a united Nigeria, be our brother’s keepers, have a president of Nigeria that will be a president representing, every tribe, every religion, every denomination. And when we get there, we will cross the bridge, the decision also to choose a running mate does not reside with any of us the governors.
