Kidnapped Benue Catholic Priest Released

Reverend Fr. Peter Amodu, the abducted Catholic priest in Otukpo, Benue State, has been released.
Reverend Amodu, pastor of Holy Ghost Parish in Eke-Olengbeche, Otukpo diocese, was released on Friday about 8:30 p.m.

The priest was abducted on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. along the Otukpo-Ugbokolo route while on his way to Okwungaga-Ughbokolo to celebrate Holy Mass.

The priest was freed late Friday, according to a statement issued by the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo and signed by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr Joseph Itodo.

In the statement, titled, “Release of Rev Fr Peter Amodu From Abduction”, the diocese thanked all the priests, religious, lay faithful, and all people of goodwill who showed solidarity and offered prayers for the speedy and safe release of the abducted priests.
Parts of the statement read, “It is with grateful hearts that we announce the safe release of our priest, Rev. Fr Peter Amodu from Abduction.

“Fr. Peter, who was kidnapped on July 6, 2022, at about 5:00 pm along Otukpo/Ugbokolo highway, Benue State, was released unharmed today, July 8, 2022, at about 8:30 pm.

The church also prayed for the safe rescue of other numerous people who were still in the den of kidnappers across the country.

It could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report if ransom was paid for the release of the priest.

Efforts to get the reaction of the State Command Spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene on the release of the priest were not successful as her phone rang, but did not pick up..
