Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue State, has urged all presidential candidates in the various political parties to prioritize Nigeria over their own interests in the general election scheduled for next year.

On Wednesday, July 20, 2022, Governor Ortom issued the challenge while hosting Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, at his private residence in Abuja.

He claimed that Nigerians were in desperate need of “commitment and competence”-driven individuals who could resolve the leadership problem that had turned the nation into complete anarchy.

The governor stated that one of the qualified Nigerians who the people were looking forward to seeing him lead the country out of the leadership crisis was Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

Governor Ortom has praised the former governor of Anambra State for making the choice to interact with Nigerians, particularly influential political figures, regardless of his political inclinations or desire to become the nation’s next president.

He claimed that despite being a significant PDP supporter, the candidate thought of him as a Nigerian to consult on his aspiration.

The presidential candidate for the Labour Party had earlier stated that the trip was made out of respect for his former PDP allies, stressing that while they were now in different political parties, their friendship as citizens of the nation was still very important.

In response to the claim that he lacks the necessary infrastructure to win elections, Obi argued that the millions of Nigerians who have suffered from poor governance for an extended period of time “are my structures to win.”

He emphasized the need for all hands on deck to right the wrongs and create a better Nigeria.

The two leaders held a one-hour private meeting before speaking jointly to journalists about the main points of their discussion.
