Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has denounced the attack of Uduak Akpan, the initial suspect in the death of late Iniubong Umoren, a graduate of the University of Uyo.

Earlier, Anaedoonline.ng reported that Akpan had been given a death by hanging verdict for the murder of Umoren by Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom State High Court.

The accused was also given a life sentence by the presiding court for the rape case brought against him.

Following the court decision, Akpan tried to flee from being sent to prison, but the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) personnel and the police had to step in to stop him.

In a widely circulated video, Nigerian Correctional Service agents can be seen slapping and mistreating Akpan as they lead him to a waiting Black Maria vehicle.

In response, Omokri asked why the officers had attacked Akpan in a tweet sent from his verified Twitter account, saying that the prisoner couldn’t possibly escape and cause any harm.

He wrote: “Uduak-Abasi Akpan resists being taken to prison after he was sentenced to death over Iniubong Umoren’s murder.

“But did they have to beat him? He is in handcuffs. How far can he go? What damage can he do?”
