Olusegun Mimiko, a former governor of Ondo State, has explained how Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike saved the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from oblivion.

He claimed that during the course of the previous seven years, the Rivers governor fought off forces that sought to destroy the PDP and saved the opposition party.

At the flag-off ceremony for the Azikiwe-Iloabuchi Road in Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Mimiko announced this on Wednesday.

Mimiko said: “Beyond the self-evident physical transformation, you (Wike) have stood as a bulwark against those sworn to emasculate the main opposition party, all in their bid to force a one-party State down the throats of Nigerians.

“You were at one point virtually a one-man countervailing force, defending and protecting our dear PDP. You have also, through bold legal challenges, deepened the national consciousness on the defects in the running of our defective federal system.”

The former Ondo governor continued, saying that Wike is essential to the PDP’s effort to free itself from the grip of the APC (APC).

The Rivers governor, according to Mimiko, is well-positioned and likely to play a significant role in helping the PDP win the 2023 presidential election.

He said: “Your Excellency, our Party, the PDP, a Party for which you have laboured so much, seems saddled with the historical duty of forging this unity, a unity premised on truth, equity, and justice, a unity upon which rescuing Nigeria from the far from the satisfactory performance of the past seven years will be built.

“It is a mission that must be accomplished. A mission for which you are specially positioned and favoured to play a major role. A mission that must be subscribed to by all lovers of our country.”

Mimiko made her statement after rumors of Wike leaving the PDP arose following the party’s presidential primary.

Recall that Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential nominee, selected Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as his running mate rather than the governor of Rivers.
