The usual gridlock on the Onitsha-Owerri road in Anambra State was exacerbated on Friday by a downpour. The rain started on Wednesday.

As a result, a truck carrying goods and leaving Onitsha collided with the popular Upper Iweka junction of the road, opposite Aba Park. The incident occurred late Thursday, according to reports.

Although no lives were lost, traders and passers-by were said to have hurriedly taken precautions when they saw the truck’s driver struggling to navigate his way through.

The constant falling of container-carrying trucks on the ever-busy road, had become a source of worry to motorists and pedestrians. Road users were always seen scampering for safety each time a lorry or truck approaches.

This is just as the state Chairman of the Tipper Drivers Association of Nigeria, Nze Unekwe, lamented on several occasions over the several lives being lost as a result of usual falling of trucks.
The situation has, however, caused a traffic on both lanes of the road, especially from the Upper Iweka to Enamel and to the Amanator area as people were seen trekking to their various destinations.

The road has become almost unusable as road users lament while calling on both the Federal Government and the Anambra State Government to come to their rescue.

A road user said, “We are suffering so much on this road. Onitsha has big buildings, four-storey buildings here and there, but no road. This is not good for a commercial city.”
