NSUKKA— Professor Emeritus, Uche Azikiwe, wife of Nigeria’s first president and premier of the Eastern Region, late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, warned women this weekend to avoid marriages fraught with domestic violence.
According to the don, abusive marriages have claimed many lives in the past, and it is better to be single than to die in marriages where husbands and wives turn each other into punching bags.
Prof. Azikiwe, speaking from the Zik’s Onuiyi Haven in Enugu State’s Nsukka Local Government Area, added that education has exposed women to their fundamental human rights, insisting that the time has passed when “women were seen but not heard.”

“In the olden days, women were to be seen and not heard. Most of them didn’t go to school and didn’t know their rights, but with the influx of Christianity and education, most families nowadays, insist that their women will go to school.

“When you go to school, you are well informed of your rights and privileges.
“I think with the exposure to education, you can’t tell a woman who is not happy in a marriage to be there. I can’t even tell my daughter suffering domestic violence to continue enduring it for the fear of what people will say.

This is because life matters more than marriage. Take the case of Osinachi Nwachukwu for instance, her case is ended, and you won’t hear anything again about that lady; such a wonderful talent wasted because of alleged domestic violence.”
