Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has rebuffed new efforts by party members on the National Working Committee (NWC) to mend fences with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Wike and his supporters have insisted that the PDP Chairman must resign in order to make way for a southerner and support Atiku Abubakar’s bid for the presidency.

Recall that Wike’s men, led by former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, met with Atiku’s team, led by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, on Friday to discuss any remaining issues.

Members of the PDP NWC reportedly recommended Senator Ayu to meet privately with Wike so they could settle their differences face-to-face, but the former Senate President refused the suggestion.

When the NWC met on Thursday, they suggested that if Ayu was unwilling to meet Wike privately, they would go to Port Harcourt with him.

Speaking to the media, one of the NWC members expressed concerns that the crisis was taking a personal turn, pleading with the national chairman to act as a leader and visit Wike to address the problem before it became unmanageable.

According to the source, Ayu rejected the idea of a private meeting with Wike to discuss the issue, stating that Wike still had four years left to serve as the party’s national chairman.

Additionally, it was learned that Wike’s camp is attempting to guarantee that all of the governor of Rivers State’s supporters are kept on board once the election campaign gets underway.

A source said: “We are waiting for a green light from the reconciliatory camps to enable the party to summon the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to approve membership of the presidential campaign council of the party.”
