Politicians have been forewarned by Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto State that exploiting religion to influence politics will have a negative impact on the nation’s progress.

Bishop Kukah pointed out that such political actions will have serious repercussions, just as it did in Germany during Adolf Hitler’s rule.

In Abuja, Nigeria, on Tuesday, as part of celebrations for his 70th birthday, he made the comment while introducing his brand-new book, “Broken Truth.”

He said that history shows that using religion to influence politics has negative effects, and that we should look at Germany because Hitler is a prime example of these effects.

According to Bishop Kukah, the issue is that the political elites in Nigeria lacked the mental capacity to comprehend the ramifications of the fire they were fueling.

He noted that, outside of a very small percentage, there was little evidence to imply that the typical northerner, whether Fulani or Hausa, could express pride in the country’s democratic structure.

He added, “So, if you decide that you want to give privilege to a religion or an ethnic group, what will happen is that others automatically become outsiders.”

He claimed that protests are still going on around the nation and that the people were smarter than those in charge of its affairs.

He emphasized that it would not have been detrimental for those who lack information to seek it out.
