Ogbonna Nwuke, a PDP chieftain, claims that the party’s crisis cannot be resolved by the resignation of Senator Walid Jibrin as chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT).

Jibrin resigned from his position on Thursday during the 97th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, according to Anaedoonline.ng.

Adolphus Wabara, the former Senate President, was elected as the new PDP BoT Chairman following Jibrin’s departure.

Nwuke claimed in an interview with Newsmen that Jibrin’s resignation would not be enough to placate Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his allies.

The former House of Representatives member claimed that BoT was merely an advisory group with little bearing on the party.

The national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, and presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar cannot be from the North, he said, which he claimed undermines fairness and equity.

He said: “The situation is very clear, you cannot have a presidential candidate from a particular zone and the national chairman from that same zone. That does not answer the equation question inherent in the PDP Constitution. We must do the needful if we want peace as we get closer to the kick-off of campaigns.”

Nwuke, on the other hand, praised Jibrin for endorsing the Wike camp’s stance that Ayu must step down in order to bring peace back to the party.

He said: “Wahid Jibril is a gentleman. From the beginning, he was always on the path of truth. But that is not enough to balance the imbalanced equation as we see it in the PDP today. The national chairman of the party has to resign. That demand is very key to us.”
