Senator Walid Jibrin, the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, has stated the reason for his resignation.

Recall that Jibrin made his resignation known on Thursday during the 97th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

Jibrin stated during his statement at the gathering that he resigned from his job to help Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential nominee, become Nigeria’s next leader in 2023.

Jiibrin, however, said that if Atiku wins the upcoming presidential election, a higher job will be guaranteed to him.

He said: “All we want to ensure is that Atiku becomes the president of Nigeria by all means. That is why I decided to step down from the BoT. And I discussed this with the candidate and the candidate agrees with me. If the party wins I will be given a bigger position.”

Adolphus Wabara, a former Senate President, took over for Jibrin as a result.

Jibrin’s resignation came amid the party’s internal crisis, which was sparked by the selection of Atiku as the party’s presidential candidate for 2023. Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, who lost the primary election in Abuja in May, felt cheated.

The national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, must retire as a condition of peace, according to the Rivers governor, who has also made other requests.

There have been numerous attempts to end the problem, but none have been successful.
