The days of election results manipulation in Nigeria, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), are ended.
At the launch of the Election Results Analysis Dashboard (ERAD) Report on Electronic Transmission of Results, which was sponsored by Yiaga Africa, the chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, addressed on Friday in Abuja.
Yakubu pointed out that it was given the authority to use electronic methods for both accreditation and results administration by the new Electoral Act, 2022.
He said that the adoption of the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) had boosted trust in the election process.
Yakubu outlined how the BVAS uses fingerprint and facial recognition to identify and certify voters as well as take and upload photos of the Polling Unit Result Form (Form EC8A) to the IReV portal.
The commission has been able to significantly address main difficulties, according to the chairman, with the aid of the Electoral Act, administrative measures, and technology.
He mentioned problems in computation, tampering with results, collating incorrect results, faking results at polling places, and faking the number of registered voters.
Obtaining declaration and return without consent, making declaration and return while collation is ongoing, exchanging result sheets, fabricating result sheets, stealing and destroying result sheets, and inadequate recordkeeping are additional crimes.
“The commission has increased the transparency and confidence of the public in its election result management processes.
“I can confidently say that the days of wanton manipulation of election results are over; yet, the commission is not resting on its oars.”
