On Thursday, the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) denounced protests and called for Sheikh Ahmed Abubakar Gumi’s arrest.

In defiance of rumors, the northern organization asserted that the Islamic scholar had good intentions for the country and that Nigeria benefited from his frequent contact with terrorists and robbers.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, NYCN was responding to a previous statement by the Coalition for Peace in Nigeria (COPIN) that called for Gumi’s detention and prosecution.

COPIN claimed that Gumi’s romance with criminals and terrorists was the reason they requested the Department of State Services (DSS) to detain, question, and prosecute the well-known Islamic scholar. This was done through the National Coordinator, Emeka Akwuobi, and Secretary of the group, Fatih Yakubu.

The organization condemned Gumi, highlighting the fact that he is collaborating with bandits in the North and igniting turmoil across the nation.

However, in response, NYCN advised COPIN to watch its words in a statement released to journalists on Thursday by its National President, Isah Abubakar.

The organization, according to Abubakar, should take note of the fact that Sheikh Gumi’s interference was motivated by his wish for his region and people to live in security and peace and for human dignity to be protected in Northern Nigeria.

He said: “Where bandits have taken over and have institutionalized authorities, to find a lasting solution to the activities of bandits in the region, the involvement of Gumi at the time he did was not with any bad intentions but rather to salvage our nation.”

The NYCN president claimed that Gumi’s request for amnesty was a component of an alternative conflict settlement process that had been successful in other parts of the world and the region.

He pointed out that the Islamic cleric believed the same might be used to stop bandits’ and terrorists’ operations in the North and North West.

Gumi was further defended by Abubakar, who noted that the cleric was not the first to advocate for such a step.

He recounted that at various points, the governors of Zamfara State and Katsina, Aminu Bello Matsari and Bello Matawalle, both advocated for the amnesty of bandits.

According to NYCN, Akwuobi and his group’s speech had the potential to spark a religious uprising in the nation.

Additionally, it claimed Akwuobi was an agent for some groups. The statement noted that Northern Nigerian youths remain steadfast and supportive of any model being investigated to end insecurity, but it also stated that they would not allow any sort of provocation against their leaders, particularly the religious leaders.

The statement went on to say that it valued the work done by all security agencies to ensure that their region and highways returned to normal for the protection of travelers and local residents, and it pledged to support security authorities at all times.
